The Trial Lesson - Frequently Asked Questions |
| (Q) | What will I learn during my trial lesson and what exactly does it include? |
(A) | Your lesson will start with a thorough briefing which will cover aspects such as flying controls, safety procedures and the basic physics that make an aircraft fly. You will then be shown how to conduct the external and internal pre-flight checks necessary before each flight. Then it's up and away for an experience of a lifetime whilst you learn how to control an aircraft in flight. |
| (Q) | Is the trial lesson classified as real flying training? |
(A) | Yes. The trial lesson is essentially lesson No 1. The time between the wheel brakes being released to when they are reapplied on your return can be entered into your personal log book and will count towards the set number of training hours required to obtain a PPL - 'Private Pilots Licence' |
| (Q) | How long does the lesson last? |
(A) | Southern Flying Centre offer several trial lesson options which are detailed below. You will generally be in the air for 30 to 60 minutes depending on which flight option you choose. Some of our trial flights include a landing and short stop over at another airport in which case you could be away for up to 4hrs. |
| (Q) | Will I be able to control, take off and land the aircraft? |
(A) | All training aircraft have dual controls and the majority of students take off themselves under careful supervision of their instructor. You will also take the controls whilst airborne and learn how to to climb, bank, yaw and descend in the aircraft. Depending on wind conditions etc you will also follow-through on the controls with your instructor during the landing. It's not a rare event for a student to make a passable landing on their first flight! |
| (Q) | Can I take a friend with me on the trial lesson? |
(A) | Trial lessons in our aircraft accommodate instructor and student. |
| (Q) | In what type of aircraft will I take my flight? |
(A) | Southern Flying Centre have an enviable fleet of light aircraft. You may chose from the Piper Super Cub, Piper Warrior or the Cessna 150. Please click here for full details of our fleet. |
| (Q) | Do I have to choose the precise day and time for the flight when I purchase a trial lesson voucher? |
(A) | No. You don't have to book a date for the lesson at the time of purchase as your voucher is valid for a period of 6 months. |
| (Q) | If I book a trial flight am I making a financial commitment to take further lessons? |
(A) | No. We hope that you will enjoy your first flight with us so much that you will wish to continue your training and qualify for a PPL - 'Private Pilots Licence'. However, you are not committing yourself to take any further lessons. |
| (Q) | Are there any age restrictions? |
(A) | No, however the student must be of sufficient stature to safely reach the aircraft controls (e.g. approx 13 years old). |
| (Q) | Are the any medical restrictions? |
(A) | Anybody who is in general good health can take a trial lesson. However, if you wish to continue lessons and obtain your PPL you will need to pass an authorised CAA medical before you take your first solo flight.
