Due to the seemingly vast amount of subject matter that needs to be covered the journey from beginner to qualified pilot may seem like a daunting prospect to many students who wish to work towards their PPL. However, learning to fly is not as difficult as people generally believe it to be.
SFC have designed this flying training package to offer beginner PPL students a clear and concise insight into what's really involved in obtaining a private pilots licence. Having competed the course you will not only have started to acquire the essential flying skills required to obtain your PPL but will also be confident that gaining your licence will only be a matter of practice, development and enhancement of these skills. In short, there will be no major surprises along the way if you decide to continue your flying training.
The course package includes a selected range of flying lessons covering the principal aspects of flight training that a student will encounter, develop and expand upon during the 45 or so training hours it takes to achieve their PPL :-
1 hour Aeroplane Handling
1 hour Take-offs and Landings
1 hour Flight Navigation
These lessons will be entered into your pilot's log book and will count towards your flying licence should you wish to continue your PPL flight training.
Lesson 1 - Aeroplane Handling
To enable you to understand in detail the content and objectives of the first flying lesson a pre-flight briefing
will be carried out by one of our experienced flying instructors.
The 1 hour flight will consist of: -
Taxiing the aircraft
Assisted
take-Off
Use of the elevator – The
effects and how to regain and maintain level flight
Use of the ailerons – The
effects and how to smoothly turn the aircraft
Use of the rudder – The
effects and how to maintain balanced flight
How to increase and decrease airspeed and how airspeed effects the aircraft
How to increase and decrease engine power and how power effects the aircraft
How to set the aircraft trim wheel to allow more accurate flying
How to extend and retract the flaps and the effect this has on the aircraft
Assisted
landing
Following the flight your instructor
will carry out a
full flight de-brief on your first flying lesson.
Lesson
2 - Take-offs and Landings
A second pre-flight briefing
will be carried out by your instructor to introduce you to the taxiing, holding, lining-up, radio communications and circuit procedures that are used during the take-off and landing phases of flight.
The 1 hour flight will consist of: -
Taxiing the aircraft
Pre take-off checks
Lining-up to threshold
Assisted
take-off
Climbing
Flaps, power, aileron, elevator and rudder control
Turns at circuit height following circuit pattern
Engine management procedures
Circuit safety checks
Descent and turn into final approach
Finals approach techniques and safety checks
Missed approach (go-around procedures)
Touch-and-go landings (the sequence from take-off will then be repeated as many times as possible during the 1 hour flight)
Landing roll-out and braking techniques
During the course of this lesson you will also start to become familiar
with the radio communications used during take-off,
circuit and landing phases.
Following the flight your instructor will
carry out a
full flight de-brief on your second flying lesson.
Lesson 3 - Navigation
Another pre-flight briefing will be carried out by your instructor. You will be introduced to the aeronautical charts, calculation aids and flight planning techniques that are essential to accurate VFR (visual flight rules) cross country flight navigation.
The 1 hour flight will consist of: -
Taxiing the aircraft
Take-off and circuit departure procedure
Navigation exercises including
:-
Map to ground feature identification
Way-point checks
Direction indicator to compass calibration
Track correction techniques
Alternative / diversion route due to bad weather procedures
Return cross country navigation flight to Shoreham
Circuit joining procedure
Landing at Shoreham
During the course of this lesson you will also start to become
familiar with the radio communications used during cross country
flight navigation and re-joining the circuit.
Following the flight your instructor will carry out a
full flight de-brief on your third flying lesson.
